Many thanks to Edwin Maher, the Managing Director of the Motor Museum who along with his colleague, gave us a private tour of the Museum and its facilities, prior to it opening to the public on 27th May 2010. The Wolseley Register are proud to be the first classic car club to visit the Museum and presented Edwin and the Museum with a Wolseley Register plaque for display.
The Museum is housed in the Old Blue Mill at Backbarrow, near Newby Bridge. This site was originally used for the production of Ultramarine, a blue pigment used in many industrial processes. Evidence is still present in some of the stonework around the site which, to this day, has a deep blue tinge.
Having outgrown the old site at Holker Hall, also in Cumbria, the Museum moved to Backbarrow in order display more of the 30,000 exhibits that are held by the Museum. The main exhibition hall is themed to show transport through the ages, over 100 years of Road Transport history, from the earliest horse transport, through to future hybrid technology. In addition to this, there is a large collection of motoring memorabilia and a 1930's Garage Re-creation. The Motorists' Gift Shop and Automobilia Cafe are also well worth a visit.
One of the highlights of the Lakeland Motor Museum is the Campbell Bluebird Exhibition. Here visitors can see the history of the 21 world speed records created by the heroic Campbell family, as well as several of the record breaking vehicles.
We intend to return to the Museum soon, when even more exhibits will be on display and it is finally open to the public. We hope to combine the visit with a Lake Cruise on Windermere and a trip on the nearby Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway.
All members present, can thoroughly recommend a visit to the fascinating and exciting Lakeland Motor Museum which is set in the most beautiful countryside in Britain.
