We met on Sunday morning at Turton Tower in Bolton, a beautiful 15th century English country house set on the edge of the popular walking area of the West Pennine Moors. Thanks to Fiona Jenkins, Manager and John Gardiner, Heritage Buildings Supervisor. John gave some of us a tour of the Tower while others enjoyed the delights of the Victorian tea room there. Outside, Gary from BBC Radio Lancashire was broadcasting live to the public doing his Sunday morning show.
After leaving Turton Tower, we followed Mike (aka Jenson Button!), our Publications officer down to the East Lancashire Railway and had a brief stop there. From here we had a great drive of some 50 miles around the Darwen and Bolton countryside, stopping at Scout Road viewing point where, on a clear day, you can see below you, the three counties of Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Cheshire.
We arrived at Bolton Steam Museum later in the afternoon for an organised tour of the Bolton Steam Museum, where we were given a very interesting talk and tour by the very knowledgeable John Petre, Secretary of the Northern Mill Engine Society. Thank you very much for this John, it was really appreciated.
Following on from the Museum, after some discussion and maintenance of the engine of Mike's 1932 Hornet, which appeared to have had a broken rocker shaft, we went to the Smithills Coaching House for dinner. What a dinner that was! Phillip, our Editor is probably still recovering from his giant mixed grill!
A fantastic day out was enjoyed by all. Thanks to everyone for attending.
